Portrait of James Ash

About

James Ash is a photographer based in Truckee, California, working in alpine and mountain stills with skiing and ski mountaineering at the center of the practice.

The mountains came first. He skied, climbed, and ran in big terrain for years before the camera became part of the equation — picked up in late 2024 to bring something back from the days when the line, the light, or the company felt like they should be recorded. The work is recent. The trips are real.

So far the photographs are from a winter month in Finnmark, in the Norwegian Arctic, and from a year along the Eastern Sierra crest. Yosemite and the North Cascades are next, in the season ahead. The recurring image, on every trip, is the same — a single figure inside terrain that dwarfs them. Small human, vast country.

He shoots a Fujifilm X-T5 and works in stills only.

The practice runs alongside a day role in infrastructure investing. It is a creative outlet first, a way to trade work for guided trips second, and a print business if the photographs eventually earn the right to be one.

Prints & Collaboration

Prints from any image on the site are available on request. James also collaborates with guides, athletes, and operators on barter — photography in exchange for a place on the trip. If you're guiding ski mountaineering in the Andes, Alaska, or anywhere with real terrain and partial frame for media, please reach out.
